Finding local keywords: how to target service plus city

Customers search for "service plus city" and for "near me". Here is how to find the local keywords with real demand that your business can actually rank for.

Why local keywords are different

Someone typing "roofer" could be anywhere. Someone typing "roofer Tilburg" or "roofer near me" has clear local intent and wants someone close by. Those last searches are gold for a local business: less competition, higher buying intent.

The types of local keywords

  • Service plus city. "hairdresser Eindhoven", "lawyer Utrecht", "plumber Breda". The backbone of local SEO.
  • Service plus neighborhood. "dentist Woensel", "restaurant Piushaven". Lower volume, but very targeted and easier to win.
  • Near me. "bakery near me", "garage nearby". Google translates this to the searcher location.
  • Question plus local. "best sushi Rotterdam", "cheap mover Den Bosch". Here your review reputation weighs heavily.

How do you find the right keywords?

  • Start with your services and add your city and the surrounding towns.
  • Think in neighborhoods and nearby villages, not just the city itself.
  • Look at the suggestions Google offers in the search bar and at the bottom of the page.
  • Watch for buying intent: "emergency", "24 hour" or "price" reveal someone ready to choose.
  • Check per keyword whether there is real volume and how heavy the competition is, so you start with the achievable wins.

From keyword to page

Create a clear page or section for each important service and location combination. Use the keyword in the title, the first sentence and a heading, but write for people, not for the machine. Add local details that are actually true: neighborhoods you serve, references from the region, your service area.
