The document that stays on the pile

Every business owner knows the pile. A supplier contract you still need to read. A report from an advisor. The terms and conditions of a new platform. A competitor's quote a customer forwarded with the question whether you can do it cheaper.

The reading itself is not hard. It just takes time, and that time is never there when the document arrives. So it stays on the pile, or you read half of it and hope you do not miss anything important.

The Document Reader is made for exactly that moment. You give a link or paste the text, and ask the question you actually have.

What you do with it

What you ask What you get back
A summary The core of the document in a few points
A specific question The answer, with the passage where it is
The risks Obligations, penalties and conditions that are easy to overlook
Reading a web page The content of the page as if you had gone through it yourself

The difference from a general summary lies in the question. "Summarise this contract" gives you a general overview. "What is the notice period and which penalties are in it" gives you exactly the answer you need, with the place where it is, so you can read it yourself.

A PDF is really read

Many tools extract the text from a PDF and work with what is left. That goes fine for a simple letter. For a document with tables, columns or a scan it goes wrong: numbers come loose from their column, and a scanned document produces nothing.

The Document Reader does it differently. When you give a link to a PDF, the file itself goes to the model. Tables stay tables, columns do not run into each other, and a scanned document simply gets read.

That is the difference between reading an invoice and guessing at it. You do not need to switch anything on: when GENI sees that the link points to a PDF, it takes that route by itself.

Examples from practice

A lease for business premises.

"Read this contract and tell me the notice period, who pays for maintenance and whether there is an indexation clause."

A report from an advisor.

"What are the three most important recommendations in this report, and what do they cost according to the advisor?"

The terms of a new software package.

"Does anything in these terms say where my data is stored and what happens when I cancel?"

A tender.

"Which requirements does this tender set for the bidder, and what is the deadline?"

In every example the question is specific. That is the most important tip there is.

The limits

A few things to know before you start:

  • A PDF of up to 25 pages. If a document is larger, GENI says so, instead of reading half of it. Split the document or say which part you mean.
  • Only publicly reachable links. A page behind a login or paywall cannot be fetched. Paste the text into the chat yourself instead.
  • The document is not stored. If you want to search it later, put it in your knowledge base or save the summary as a note in your Workspace.
  • It is not legal advice. The Document Reader points out what is there. What it means for your situation, you discuss with a lawyer when in doubt.

If the file is on your own computer instead of online, you can also send it as an attachment in the chat. That goes through the conversation itself rather than through this skill.

Together with other skills

A single skill does one thing. The value comes when you combine it, and because GENI chooses the skills it needs itself, you do not need to set that up.

Chain What happens
Google Drive, Document Reader Have a document from your Drive read and get the key points in your chat
Gmail, Document Reader, Proposal Generator Read a request from your mail and write a proposal on it
Document Reader, SEO Blog Writer, CMS Publisher Turn a report into an article that is ready as a draft

That last one is useful if you have research or a white paper you want to translate into content for your site. If you want to build a whole topic around it, the Authority Engine does that with a main article and the pieces around it.

How skills form a process together is covered in stackable skills explained. If you need to find out something that is spread across several sources instead of one document, use Deep Research.

How to start

  1. Activate the Document Reader from the skills in your dashboard. No connection is needed.
  2. Paste a link or the text into the chat.
  3. Ask a concrete question instead of only asking for a summary.
  4. Read the passage GENI points to yourself when it concerns something important.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Document Reader read a scanned PDF?

Yes. The file itself goes to the model instead of only extracting text, so a scan gets read too. The better the quality of the scan, the more reliable the result.

What happens with a document of more than 25 pages?

GENI declines it with the reason given, instead of reading half of it. Split the document, or ask specifically about the part you need.

Is my document stored?

No, the Document Reader does not store the document. If you want to find it again later, put it in your knowledge base.
